Where Do Screenshots Go on Mac?

Mac screenshots are saved to the Desktop by default as PNG files, but you can change the location in Screenshot toolbar options.

By default, screenshots on Mac are saved to your Desktop as PNG files with names that start with 'Screenshot' followed by the date and time. For example, a file might be named 'Screenshot 2026-07-02 at 10.30.00 AM.png'.

If you used Cmd+Ctrl+Shift+3 or 4 (with the Control key), the screenshot was copied to your clipboard instead of saved as a file. Open any app like Preview, Pages, or Messages and press Cmd+V to paste it.

To change where screenshots are saved, press Cmd+Shift+5 to open the Screenshot toolbar, click 'Options', and under 'Save to' choose from Desktop, Documents, Clipboard, Mail, Messages, Preview, or Other Location for a custom folder.

You can also change the default save location permanently using Terminal. Open Terminal and type: defaults write com.apple.screencapture location ~/YourDesiredPath. Press Enter, then type: killall SystemUIServer. Press Enter to apply the change.

To find old screenshots, open Finder and use the search bar. Type 'screenshot' and filter by Kind to 'Images'. All your screenshots will appear regardless of where they were saved.

If your desktop is cluttered with screenshots, consider creating a dedicated Screenshots folder and changing the default save location to keep things organized. Many Mac users prefer saving screenshots to Documents or a dedicated folder in their home directory.

Practical takeaway: Check your Desktop first for screenshots. Use Cmd+Shift+5 Options to change the save location, or use Terminal for a permanent custom path.
