How Do You Deactivate Your Instagram Account?

Deactivate your Instagram through Account Center in Settings to temporarily hide your profile while preserving all your data.

To deactivate your Instagram account, go to your profile in the app, tap the menu icon, then navigate to Settings and Privacy, then Account Center, then Personal Details, then Account Ownership and Control, and select Deactivation or Deletion. Choose your account and select Deactivate.

Deactivation temporarily hides your profile, photos, comments, and likes. Your followers will not see your account, and your profile will not appear in search results. However, your data is preserved and you can reactivate at any time simply by logging back in with your username and password.

Alternatively, you can deactivate through a web browser. Log into instagram.com, click your profile picture, then Settings, then Account Center, then Personal Details, and follow the same steps to deactivate.

Important distinctions: deactivation is temporary and reversible. You can deactivate and reactivate as many times as you want. Your content, followers, and messages are all preserved during deactivation. Instagram allows you to deactivate once per week.

If you want to deactivate multiple Instagram accounts, you need to deactivate each one separately through its own Account Center. Instagram does not allow bulk deactivation.

For business accounts, deactivation works the same way. Your business profile will be hidden, but your insights and advertising data will be preserved for when you reactivate.

Practical takeaway: Use the in-app deactivation option through Account Center for a temporary break. Your data stays safe and you can reactivate anytime by logging back in.
