How Do I Find the IP Address of My Device?

Finding your device IP address is straightforward on any operating system using built-in settings or command line tools.

Finding the IP address of your device is straightforward on any operating system. The method depends on whether you need your local (private) IP or your public IP address.

On Windows, open Command Prompt by pressing Win+R, typing 'cmd', and pressing Enter. Type 'ipconfig' and press Enter. Your IPv4 address appears under your active network adapter, usually labeled 'Wireless LAN adapter Wi-Fi' or 'Ethernet adapter'. It looks like 192.168.x.x or 10.0.x.x.

On Mac, click the Apple menu, go to System Settings, then Network. Select your active connection (Wi-Fi or Ethernet), and your IP address is displayed in the connection details. Alternatively, open Terminal and type 'ifconfig | grep inet'.

On iPhone or iPad, go to Settings, tap Wi-Fi, then tap the blue info icon next to your connected network. Your IP address is listed under 'IP Address'.

On Android, go to Settings, then Network and Internet, then Wi-Fi. Tap your connected network and look for the IP address in the network details. On newer Android versions, it is under 'Advanced' or 'Network details'.

For your public IP address (the one websites see), simply Google 'what is my IP address' from any device with a browser.

Practical takeaway: Use ipconfig on Windows, System Settings on Mac, or Wi-Fi settings on mobile to find your local IP. Google 'what is my IP' for your public address.
