How Do I Check My Internet Speed for Free?

You can check your internet speed for free using several reliable tools available in any web browser. The most popular and accurate free speed test is speedtest.net by Ookla, which measures your download speed, upload speed, and latency (ping) in about 30 seconds.

To run a speed test, close unnecessary apps and browser tabs to get the most accurate result, visit speedtest.net or fast.com, click the 'Go' button, and wait for the test to complete. It measures download speed first, then upload speed, and reports your ping.

Fast.com by Netflix is another excellent free option. It loads instantly and starts testing immediately with no button to click. It shows download speed by default, with an option to expand and see upload speed and latency.

Google has a built-in speed test. Simply search 'speed test' on Google and a speed test widget appears at the top of the results. Click 'Run Speed Test' to check your connection without visiting another website.

For mobile devices, the Speedtest by Ookla app (free on iOS and Android) provides the same accuracy with a mobile-friendly interface.

Interpreting your results: download speed of 25+ Mbps is good for most households. Upload speed of 10+ Mbps is adequate for video calls and content creation. Ping under 50ms is excellent for gaming and real-time applications.

If your speed is significantly lower than what your ISP promises, try testing at different times of day, restart your router, move closer to your router for Wi-Fi tests, or contact your ISP with your test results.

Practical takeaway: Use speedtest.net or fast.com to check your internet speed. Test at different times of day and compare results to what your ISP advertises.
